OB/GYN 626: Maternal-Fetal-Medicine (MFM)

Maternal-Fetal-Medicine (MFM) Clerkship at Community Medical Center, Missoula, MT

The MFM clerkship provides clinical training experiences such as hands-on ultrasound and fetal echography education within a fast-paced MFM clinic serving non-urban areas throughout western Montana and eastern Idaho. The student will be integrated into the MFM service as a member of the team, participating in all aspects of the MFM practice offering both inpatient and outpatient experiences including deliveries, surgeries, etc. The student will be exposed to the care of high risk pregnant women and their fetus in the antepartum, labor and delivery and postpartum periods. Rural outreach experiences may be available.

Clinic Experience

• Perform histories and physical examinations, radiologic and laboratory review, and develop treatment plans on assigned patients registered in the MFM outpatient clinic.
• Understand the normal anatomy that can be seen on routine obstetric ultrasound
• Understand the sonographic findings and implications of the more commonly noted fetal anomalies seen during an obstetric ultrasound
• Understand the sonographic markers used for evaluation of aneuploidy and indications for screening and invasive genetic testing options

Hospital Experience

• Antepartum: Students will be exposed to patients who are admitted to the hospital during pregnancy or more complicated postpartum patients. 
• Labor and Delivery: Students will have an opportunity to follow laboring patients, be involved in vaginal, operative vaginal, and cesarean deliveries. While on L&D students will stay overnight for a call shift.  Students are expected to accompany the on-call physician.
• Postpartum: Students will accompany the attending physician on morning and evening rounds.
• Operating Room: If cases arise, students will accompany the physician(s) to the operating room for surgeries such as cerclages, fetal treatments, removal of adnexal masses during pregnancy, etc.

OB/GYN 627: Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI-PAG)

The rotation will provide the 4th year student clerk multidisciplinary exposure to the full spectrum of reproductive endocrinology and infertility in a variety of clinical settings including at comprehensive university-based IVF center, public-hospital based clinic, cancer center and subspecialty clinic in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Students can sign up for an optional L&D weekend call shift during this course.

University Reproductive Care (URC)

University Reproductive Care (URC) at UWMC Roosevelt Clinic. Primary rotation site providing exposure to infertility evaluation and management, assisted reproduction including third party reproduction, evaluation and management of anovulation and ovulation induction, recurrent pregnancy loss, menopause and hormone replacement therapy, and disorders of sexual development. The student clerk will gain exposure to transvaginal ultrasound, hysterosalpingogram, sonohysterography, and intrauterine insemination, as well as outpatient surgeries such as diagnostic hysteroscopy for uterine disorders, D&C and laparoscopy. The student will have the opportunity to participate on scheduled reproductive surgeries at URC, UWMC, and HMC including diagnostic hysteroscopy for uterine disorders and laparoscopy.

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility Clinic at Harborview Medical Center (HMC)

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility Clinic at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) will provide exposure to the medical and cultural aspects of infertility as presents across different socio-cultural demographic than typically seen in most fertility centers. The clinic serves a point of access to care for the socio-culturally diverse, often low resource and largely international communities served by the medical center. The clinic will be held with Dr. Chung on the second Thursday morning of the month (starting at 8AM).

Onco-Reproduction Clinic at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA)

Onco-Reproduction Clinic at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). This clinic held at SCCA with Dr. Yu will provide clinical exposure to the counseling of patients recently diagnosed with cancer on impact of their treatment on fertility and reproductive health as well as options available for fertility preservation. The clinic is held at SCCA on Friday afternoons twice a month.

Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH)

Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH). The Reconstructive Pelvic Medicine clinic at SCH provides exposure to the diagnostic evaluation and the interdisciplinary clinical management of complex congenital gynecologic anomalies as well as other aspects of pediatric and adolescent gynecology. Students will have opportunities to work in clinic and ORs with Drs. Debiec, Yu, and Hernandez.

OB/GYN 628: Gynecology Elective - Family Planning and Abortion Care

OBGYN 628 is a 2 week clerkship designed to introduce 4th year medical students to first trimester abortion care and family planning through direct involvement under the supervision of family medicine and OBGYN providers.  Students will have hands-on exposure to first trimester surgical abortion, medication abortion, and LARC insertion (inserting IUDs and observing the insertion of Implants) with the goal of being comfortable with each procedure by the end of the clerkship. The student will also participate in pregnancy decision counseling, ultrasound dating of pregnancy, and contraception counseling. The participating medical student will spend 2 weeks rotating between three Cedar River clinics (Seattle, Tacoma, and Renton). Limited availability:  Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer Quarters.

OB/GYN 638: Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington & Northern Idaho

Objectives

1. History skills. Gather the important information that is needed for the Ob/Gyn history and complete a history in the medical record.
2. Physical examination skills. Complete a pertinent physical exam for the evaluation of pregnancy. The student should demonstrate the ability to perform this pertinent physical examination while being observed by an attending physician.
3. Knowledge/diagnostic and treatment skills: contraceptive options, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy termination and contraceptive counseling.
4. Attitude: demonstrate professional responsibility in working as a team member with other members of the Family Planning care team, patients, and families.
5. Career/context: know the training/career pathway for Family Planning.

Students will be expected to gain experience in the following areas

2. STI check
3. Early pregnancy check and ultrasound
4. Colposcopy
5. LEEPs
6. Essure
7. 1st Trimester Ultrasound
8. Medical and surgical abortion
9. Management of failed 1st trimester pregnancies

Minimum 2 weeks, max 24 credits.

By special arrangement, for qualified students, special clerkship, externship, or preceptorship opportunities can at times be made available at institutions or private offices other than the University of Washington. Students who elect this course should complete a "Credit for Clerkship Away" form from the Dean's Office and have it approved by the OB/GYN Division of Education at least two months before advance registration.

Permission from the department is required. Students should complete a "Credit for Clerkship Away" form from the Dean's Office and have it approved by the OB/GYN Division of Education at least two months before advanced registration.
