Overview

OB/GYN rotation in Ellensburg, Washington will give students the opportunity to experience rural medicine in a small community. Students will have the opportunity to take part in seeing pregnant women in their pregnancy, attend deliveries and assist in c-sections. They will also see and care for Gynecology patients who may come in for wellness exams, consults or referrals from outside providers for various gynecological issues. These issues include heavy periods, pelvic pain, contraception, infertility, menopausal symptoms or hormone replacement therapy, pelvic organ prolapse, bladder prolapse, and urinary incontinence.

Schedule

An example of a typical week for a student would be: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday students will see patients with preceptor.  They will assist in taking histories and performing focused physical exams, observe procedures such as IUD insertions, pap smears, endometrial biopsies, colposcopies, LEEPs, vulvar or vaginal biopsies, nexplanon insertions etc.   Students will also see OB patients and assist with obtaining fetal heart tones and measuring fundal heights.  Every Wednesday students will have the opportunity to attend surgeries, scrub in on cases and assist in surgery.  Students may often be a first assistant in cases.  Example of cases that can be performed include: diagnostic/operative laparoscopies, LAVH/BSO, Anterior/Posterior repairs, D&Cs, Endometrial Ablations, Abdominal/Vaginal Hysterectomies, Laparotomies, Tubal ligations.  Fridays is an open day for seeing patients with other physicians/providers, attend any added surgery cases and also for didactics/study time. 

Call

Students will take call with preceptor within the regulation of call for medical students.  They will have the opportunity to see consults with their preceptor in the ER or other medical units.
