Personal Interests:
Spending time with family, skiing, travel and reading novels.
When do you feel the most impactful?
I love working one on one with patients and families but education of our next generation of Ob/Gyns and research multiplies that impact.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in OB/GYN?
I choose a career in gynecologic oncology because I loved the thought that I could help to cure cancer and I loved surgery. I have been fortunate to become the Surgeon-in-Chief of UWMC and fortunate to be able to participate in innovative clinical trials evaluating novel agents to treat a variety of gynecologic cancers.
What do you like about working at UW Medicine?
UW Medicine is an amazing place to work. There are so many people who have devoted to excellent patient care and innovative medicine. We are able to offer the most cutting-edge surgery and treatments but with incredible compassion and teamwork. We also provide the only OB/GYN training site in the WWAMI area and we serve as a main quatinery referral base for the five-state area. This allows us to recruit the best and brightest physicians to train.
What is one professional or academic accomplishment of which you are most proud and why?
My research in early detection of ovarian cancer has saved lives.
What are your favorite things about living in the Seattle area?
I am a fourth generation Seattle-born native and my children are fifth generation. Seattle has always been part of my family and UW Medicine has always been the place that we receive our care. Besides that we love to ski, boat and garden. Seattle is the best place in the world for all of those things.
What inspires you?
My patients are what inspire me most. As a cancer surgeon and gynecologic oncologist I have so many patients in my practice that have been able to beat the odds. I appreciate their trust in me as a physician and surgeon and I believe that the close partnership between patient and physician is what provides the best care possible.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Listen to understand and approach life with curiosity.
