BJ Rimel, MD is a board certified Gynecologic Oncologist who specializes in the treatment Gynecologic cancers with both surgery and precision medicine.

Dr. Rimel believes in a transparent and open approach to the treatment of cancers and pre-cancers that affect the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix and vulva. Her focus is to help each patient take the best advantage of the current science to effectively treat their particular condition.

Dr. Rimel’s clinical expertise includes surgery for uterine/endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and vulvar cancer. She also administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted treatments and clinical trials. In addition, she is skilled in caring for gender diverse patients and performs necessary gynecologic surgery.


What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Dr. Rimel enjoys running, baking and traveling with family in her free time.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in academic medicine at UW?

I chose to work in academic medicine to bring patients new options for treatment with clinical trials.

What is one professional or academic accomplishment of which you are most proud and why?

I was the co-chair of the first national LGBTQ+ cancer symposium in 2023. This experience culminated immense advocacy work and was the hardest and most rewarding professional experience so far.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

It’s is a privilege to be of service.

What is one thing that brings you joy, either inside or outside of work?

My children and my spouse are always curious about new things leading to a variety of unexpected adventures.

What inspires you?

The interconnectedness of biology and the incredible creativity of humans.

When do you feel the most impactful?

I believe I am most impactful when I am listening carefully to patients.
