Biography
Ayana DeGaia, MD, MPH, is an obstetrician-gynecologist with expertise in pregnancy and birth, gynecologic surgery, abortion provision, and gender-affirming and LGBTQI+ care. She has a particular interest in interventions to improve birth outcomes and experiences of Black birthing people as well as pregnancy-care systems reforms that center Black communities.
Dr. DeGaia knows that you are the expert in your health, your life and your experience. She sees her role as showing up in full presence to listen to your concerns, reviewing all the appropriate treatment options, then working with her team to provide the highest quality of care based on your specific values, concerns and circumstances.
In a few words, describe the providers clinical expertise, such as common conditions treated or procedures performed?
Dr. DeGaia is particularly skilled at providing supportive and non-coercive birth attendance, particularly for birthing people navigating challenges around trauma, fears of bias, and system or provider mistrust. She also has significant experience in providing care for LGBTQI+ folks, including gender-affirming care. Finally, she has a passion for gynecologic surgery, particularly in increasing access to advanced methods of minimally invasive and robotic surgeries to underserved populations.
What do you like to do in your free-time?
Dr. DeGaia enjoys good food, good music, dance, gardening and getting out in nature in all forms. She especially enjoys quality time with her friends and family, including her partner and son.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in academic medicine at UW?
In academic medicine, I feel blessed to participate in meaningful work in so many ways. I have the honor to care for anyone who comes to me, to focus on doing right by them and not on someone else's bottom line. I get to do research that changes lives and challenges norms. And I get to guide the bright and passionate folks that will be our next generation of providers to find their path and meet the challenges of an ever-evolving landscape in OBGYN.
