THIS RESEARCH STUDY AIMS TO INVESTIGATE HOW MEDICATIONS GET INTO BREAST MILK, BECAUSE THE MOVEMENT OF DRUGS INTO BREAST MILK IS NOT FULLY UNDERSTOOD AND FOR MANY MEDICATIONS, WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH DRUG IS IN THE BREAST MILK.
WHAT IS THE STUDY?
This study is designed to understand how the body handles medications during lactation.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE STUDY?
This study will help us predict drug movement into breast milk.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?
You might be eligible if you are:
- A healthy pregnant individual
- Not taking any medications
- Planning to nurse your infant for at least 6 months after delivery
Please note: We are recruiting pregnant participants, but the first study day is not until after delivery.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
If you agree to participate in the study, after delivery of your baby, you will have 3 study days:
- 3-5 weeks after delivery
- 3-4 months after delivery and
- 6-8 months after delivery
Each study day will last 12-13 hours. During each study day, you will take a single dose of an over-the-counter heartburn medication (cimetidine 200 mg orally) and we will collect blood, urine and breast milk samples from you.
WHAT IS THE COMPENSATION FOR STUDY PARTICIPATION?
Compensation for the study if all study procedures are completed is $700.
