What are some of your favorite activities outside of work?

My favorite activities outside of work include knitting, baking, walking, and traveling to Paris for the French Open.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in academic medicine at UW?

I decided to pursue a career in academic medicine because of my passion for research and the desire to make a difference in the realm of public health. The ability to make a lasting impact on both the scientific community and individual careers is incredibly fulfilling.

What is one professional or academic accomplishment of which you are most proud and why?

Throughout my career, I have had the honor of being a statistical mentor to many fellows and junior faculty. I take great pride in watching them create research careers that have flourished. Seeing their success and knowing that I played a role in their development is immensely rewarding.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Focus on what you can control and be open to the notion that there is more than one way to do something. This mindset has driven me to continually seek out new knowledge and skills, allowing me to stay at the forefront of my field and provide the best possible guidance to my colleagues and students.

What is one thing that brings you joy, either inside or outside of work?

The ability to help others succeed brings me immense joy. Whether it's assisting a colleague with their research methodology or teaching a new statistical method to a fellow, knowing that I have contributed to their progress is incredibly satisfying.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the pursuit of knowledge and the potential to make a difference in the lives of others. The dedication and passion of my colleagues and students also serve as a constant source of motivation. Additionally, the evolving nature of medical research keeps me inspired to continually seek out new challenges and opportunities for growth.

When do you feel the most impactful?

I feel most impactful when I can guide people to the best possible methodology to analyze their data. By providing clear and effective statistical advice, I help ensure that their research is robust and reliable, ultimately contributing to the advancement of medical science.
