Credentialing
Four to six weeks prior to your rotation start date, WWAMI Track Coordinator Jenny Jutz (jenny.jut@riverstonehealth.org), will email you requesting required information for your clerkship in Billings, MT. Current drug screen is required for this rotation.
Orientation
You will typically arrive in Billings the weekend before your first day of the clerkship. Plan to arrive by Sunday. The Billings Track office will inform you about your orientation on the first day prior to your arrival. On your first day of clerkship, you will complete a required orientation and tour, prior to meeting your preceptor, who will then provide you with a written schedule for the following six-weeks.
Again, we welcome you to Billings, and hope that your experience here will prompt a return to Montana in the future!
Clinical Faculty
There are numerous board-certified OB/GYN physicians participating in the WWAMI program at this site. During your six-week rotation, you will be assigned to at least two of these physicians, and will see patients in their offices approximately four half-days per week. You will be expected to go to surgery with your preceptors, and to participate in deliveries done by your preceptors. You will make one or two presentations weekly to your preceptors.
Hospitals
There are two hospitals in Billings, St. Vincent Healthcare (STV or SVH) and Billings Clinic (BC). The OBGYN rotation is completed within Billings Clinic; a medical foundation composed of a multi-specialty physician group practice and 272-bed JCAHO-accredited hospital. Billings Clinic, the oldest and largest multi-specialty group practice in the region with more than 180 physicians, serves as a tertiary care facility for the region. Billings Clinic's medical staff includes physicians, physician assistants and family nurse practitioners in Billings and branch locations in Miles City, Red Lodge, Big Timber and Columbus, Montana and Cody, Wyoming.
The WWAMI clerkship will take place in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Billings Clinic. This busy, multi-physician office offers a wide range of basic and specialized services including infertility evaluations, microsurgical procedures, high-risk obstetrics with amniocentesis and ultrasound services. Gynecologic care includes gynecologic urology and oncology. Sub-specialists in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology also participate in the medical student experience. Students will rotate with the physicians in the department. The Family Birth Center at Billings Clinic opened in 1999, providing the community with a single-room maternity care unit with the newest technology for mothers, newborns, and their families.
Call and Call Rooms
Your preceptor will determine your call. In general, you will be expected to take call when your preceptor is on call, and to follow your preceptor's schedule. Most preceptors take obstetric call on their own patients every day of the week, and on alternate weekends. You will be on call two weekends during the six week rotation.
Housing and Meals
We are happy to announce the availability of two student houses. A large six-bedroom, fully furnished house and a large five-bedroom, fully furnished house which may both be shared with other students from in and out of the WWAMI Region. Amenities include BBQ, large back yard, wireless internet, basketball hoop, washer/dryer, and dishwasher. Please review housing information section prior to arrival. NO pets are allowed. A car is encouraged for this site. There is public transportation available if needed, however it would be prudent to have a vehicle to travel at any hour or for longer distances. Hospitals are a 5 minute walk from both student houses. Bicycles are great in the non-winter. Housing is not conducive for families staying with student.
Transportation
A personal automobile is required, as transportation is not provided. You will be within walking distance of the hospitals, but not the out-patient clinic. Some students often bring their own bikes to Billings.
Educational Conferences
Weekly Grand Rounds are offered at all facilities that work with WWAMI students: Billings Clinic and St. Vincent’s Healthcare and RiverStone Health. Please reach out to the Billings Track Coordinator for more information.
Other Educational Opportunities
During your six-week clerkship, there may be a fun evening of learning planned. Known in Billings as “Frank Discussions”, named after Frank Newman, one of the founders at MSU, whom became the director of the MSU branch of the WWAMI program. Frank directed other health professional programs including the Montana Family Practice Residency Program, the Montana Area Health Education Center and the Montana Office of Rural Health. If an event is planned during your time in Billings, you will received information regarding this from the WWAMI Track Coordinator.
