Overview
Our commitment to training the next generation of women's healthcare leaders includes providing access to the most up-to-date technology, teachers, and topics. We are proud to offer these training features as part of the UW School of Medicine.
Surgical Skills Curriculum
Our training program utilizes a strong surgical skills curriculum and simulation lab.
Our comprehensive surgical skills curriculum enhances resident education and promotes patient safety and teamwork. Faculty-led simulations encompass core Gynecology topics such as Cone/LEEP, surgical instruments and electrosurgery, cystoscopy/hysteroscopy, laparoscopic and robotic training, including preparation for the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery exam, and Family Planning procedures.
Our Obstetrics simulations utilize ACOG’s “Emergencies in Clinical Obstetrics” curriculum to rehearse and demonstrate skills for urgent clinical scenarios, such as post-partum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, uterine inversion, and operative vaginal delivery. Simulations delivering bad news and communication skills are incorporated into these sessions.
For simulation training at UW Montlake campus, our residents have 24-hour access to the WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH), as well as utilizing the state-of-the-art UW School of Nursing Simulation center for larger team-based OB drills and debriefs. Our simulation program is led by Dr. Renata Urban, Dr. Mike Fialkow, and Dr. Pete Napolitano is incorporated into protected Wednesday didactic time. Simulation programming is evaluated yearly by residents and adjusted to meet educational needs.
WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH)
The primary goal of WISH is to provide leadership in the use of simulation technologies to improve the quality of health care education, patient safety and outcomes.
Our nationally recognized center has placed UWMC at the "virtual" cutting edge in surgical skills and simulation. It is conveniently located on the first floor of the University of Washington Medical Center's Surgery Pavilion.
WISH is the University of Washington’s premiere simulation training facility for healthcare education.
WISH received accreditation as a Level I Comprehensive Education Institute of the American College of Surgeons in 2006.
