Introduction
Swedish Medical Center is a large multi-centered healthcare system and your clerkship here will benefit from the large number of varied OB/GYN patients. Our program is primarily based at the First Hill campus, with clinic days split between First Hill, Ballard, and Issaquah. A smaller number of students are at the Swedish Edmonds campus.
Orientation
On the first day after morning orientation at the UW the students assigned to the Swedish clerkship will meet the resident at Swedish on their assigned rotation block. If assigned to clinic on the rotation start date, you will meet with the attending. Bryan Fujimoto will provide information about badges, computer access, parking passes, and food card. You will need to obtain your badge on arrival to the hospital.
Swedish first hill - obstetrics
While on the obstetrics service at First Hill you will be exposed to normal and high-risk obstetrics under the supervision of a faculty attending and work closely with the R1 resident on service. The student will scrub for Cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries. Rounds are made daily. Two weekend shifts of OB call are required. During your weeks on obstetrics you will help care for patients with pre-eclampsia, premature ruptured membranes, multiple pregnancy, placenta accreta, and pregnant patients with complex medical diseases such as diabetes.
Swedish first hill - gynecology
Days in the operating room will be spent with gynecologic surgeons performing traditional gynecologic surgery, vaginal surgery, and minimally invasive and robotic surgery. It is expected that the student will improve their technical skills including wound closure and a satisfactory two-handed surgical knot. In addition, the student will learn proper patient positioning and sterile technique. Students may also accompany the GYN resident to the ER and inpatient consults and will round on the inpatient service.
Swedish Edmonds
At Swedish Edmonds, you’ll have the opportunity to work one-on-one our physicians to experience the full spectrum of community OB/GYN. We try to optimize the rotation to your interests while providing time on Labor and Delivery, in clinic, and in the OR developing surgical skills. You’ll also have opportunities to spend time in ultrasound and working with our nurse practitioners to learn how to do breast and pelvic exams. We serve a diverse community in south Snohomish county and provide a full range of high and low-risk obstetrical care, minimally invasive and major surgical procedures, and gynecological care. Parking is free at this site. Please report to clinic following orientation on the first day for a site specific orientation.
outpatient obstetrics and gynecology
Time will be spent at one of the Swedish campuses with board certified OB/GYNs seeing a variety of gynecologic and obstetric patients. The student will be exposed to evaluation of abnormal Pap smears, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, contraception and well-woman care as well as management of normal and abnormal pregnancies. This portion of the clerkship includes instruction in taking a gynecologic history and pelvic examination. These students will need to complete additional credentialing (see below).
thursday morning didactics
On Thursday mornings, students will join the Swedish resident didactics. These sessions are designed to expand student's OB/GYN fund of knowledge, master the skills of OB/GYN history taking, prepare for the shelf exam, and survey the current literature. If the student is assigned to clinic on a Thursday, they should attend the UW student didactics courses on Wednesday for that week.

The OB/GYN department requires the following:
- 2 patient write-ups
- a pelvic and breast examination form
- an observed OB/GYN history
