student Experience

Depending on the preceptor's schedule, students will take part in seeing pregnant women as well as patients who come in for annual wellness exams, referrals from outside providers for such issues as heavy periods, pelvic pain, contraception, infertility, menopausal symptoms or hormone replacement therapy, pelvic organ prolapse, bladder prolapse, and urinary incontinence.

An example of a typical week for a student would be: Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays - student sees patients in clinic with preceptor, takes part in history and physical exams, procedures such as IUD insertions, EMBs, pap smears, colposcopies, vulvar or vaginal biopses, nexplanon insertions etc. Students will aslo see OB patients and assist with obtaining fetal heart tones and assist in NSTs that are performed in clinic with the RN. Tuesday mornings - students will actively participate in surgical cases, diagnostic/operative laparoscopies, LAVH/BSO, Anterior/Posterior repairs, Suburethral slings, D&Cs, Endometrial Ablations, Abdominal/Vaginal Hysterectomies, Laparotomies, Tubal ligations, etc. Tuesday afternoon and Thursday - students will attend clinic with MFM and learn how to interpret ultrasounds and also learn about the MFM subspecialty.

Students will participate in rounding on patients in labor, attend deliveries, and also see patients postpartum. Students will see consults with their preceptor in the ER when the preceptor is on call and learn how consultations are performed.

Students will have the opportunity to see how NSTs are performed and evaluated in clinic. They will also have the opportunity, if interested, in spending time with the lactation consultant and learn about common issues with breastfeeding and how mothers are counselled and helped.
