Congratulations to MFM Fellow, Dr. Allen Ghareeb, who matched to University of California San Diego's Fellowship in Critical Care Anesthesia! Dr. Ghareeb will attend the program beginning Summer of 2026 with the intention of becoming a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Subspecialist and Intensivist.

In your own words, what is unique about Maternal Fetal Medicine Subspecialists & Intensivists?

Maternal-Fetal Medicine is the best subspeciality (I'm biased) as we get to care for some of the most vulnerable pregnant patients and help provide guidance, counseling, and care to medically complex pregnancies, both from a maternal and fetal perspective. While an uncommon path, MFM-Intensivists are a growing need within the community as maternal care deserts widen, and patients with severe comorbidites seek pregnancy. Intensivists are uniquely poised to bridge the gap in understanding between critical care physiology and maternal physiology.

Why did you choose to pursue this additional training?

As reproductive health continues to be jeopardized in this country, the result is often an increase in severe maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly as access to care becomes more disparate. My interests are largely focused on reducing severe maternal morbidity and mortality - particularly in maternal care deserts. My dream job is to eventually travel to smaller/critical access hospitals across the South and Midwest and assist in the implementation of higher levels of intensive care in critically resourced settings, and the training of those providers.
