Why did you decide to pursue a career in OB/GYN?

I chose a career in midwifery because it is such a beautiful and fascinating intersection of physiology, psychology, and sociology. The medical aspects of pregnancy and birth are interesting, but just as important is how women and their families navigate the changes that come with having a baby, breastfeeding baby, and growing a family. I see my role as not just keeping the woman and her baby safe, but helping support motherhood by making sure she is empowered to own her unique experience. I also love that no matter how much we know, there is still some aspects of mystery and magic to this miraculous process.

What do you like about working at UW Medicine?

Being part of this world-class academic medical center gives me, and my patients, access to some of the top professionals in the field of high risk obstetrics as well as other specialties. We get to participate in research studies and keep abreast of new developments in our field. I love the Health Sciences Library resources and use them almost daily. I am also proud that UWMC is a Magnet Hospital which means we have policies that help us provide top quality care and attract the best nurses.

What are your favorite things about living in the Seattle area?

I love our climate--everyone knows about the rain, but our summers are the best of anywhere in the U.S. I also appreciate our progressive politics and being close to beautiful wilderness areas.

What inspires you?

The best part of my job is getting to know all the amazing women and their partners who trust us to help them through this most challenging and precious time. They inspire and help me learn more every day.
