Purpose

A six week immersion into a busy, generalist OB/GYN practice, allowing exposure to all components of women’s health from childbirth to menopause. At the completion of the rotation I hope to see basic proficiency in routine OB visits, evaluation of routine gynecologic concerns like adnexal masses, irregular bleeding, and pelvic pain, and basic operating room skills and awareness.

Site Description

Historical perspective: Tanana Valley Clinic is the largest and oldest multispecialty clinic in the state of Alaska. We have a growing OB/GYN department with a significant referral base from our large family medicine and internal medicine departments.

Fairbanks is a boomtown. Gold initially brought prospectors to the interior in the early 1900’s. Another boom of oil surged the population of Fairbanks in the 1970s. Currently the University system, the Army base, and Air Force base, and Fort Knox gold mine provide the majority of employment opportunities in the community.

Geographic Considerations: Summers are warm and bright with nearly 24 hours of sunlight in the months of June and July. Winters can be cold and dark, specifically through the months of December, January and February. Outdoor activities are abundant year round. The community is isolated with only two roads connecting it with outside communities. The nearest sizeable town is over 300 miles away.

Teaching Hospitals: Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in town and provides services for an area the size of the state of Texas. FMH is a 152 bed hospital and provides care in more than 27 specialties. There is a 12 bed L&D with 1 operating room on the L&D floor. A newly constructed, state of the art, 6 suite operating room opened in April of 2017.

Clinical Setting and Faculty: Tanana Valley Clinic OB/GYN is a private clinic located in the south wing of the hospital facility. The clinic employs two board certified OB/GYN physicians and one CNM. The student is assigned to a preceptor for six weeks. During this period of time, the preceptor and student coordinate their schedules. Days are full of office visits, lectures, labor and delivery call, and surgery.

Study Facilities: Fairbanks Memorial Hospital has a medical library that is readily available for study space. TVC also has several private conference rooms that can be used for studying. There is Wi-Fi available throughout the clinic and hospital for access to medical references.

Call: Students will take call from home with their preceptors to attend after-hours births, surgeries, and ER consultations as they occur.
